Mission: Junk Buster

Brief

Design a digital game which connects with a wider social purpose.

Games can be forces for good. Just like other forms of
areas of art and design, games can be used as vehicles of communication; the engagement and activity of game play can help users imagine and re-visualise situations to encourage them to think about the world in a new way.

Working in groups, you are to design and present a game concept and prototype which creatively and thoughtfully uses a game environment to address a social need or communicate a subject or issue in an engaging way.

Solution

my group and I decided to combat the issue of space junk which we wanted to aim at a target audience of 8-13 years of age.

Space Junk is an issue where not many people tend to have great knowledge. We believed teaching our target audience about this issue through a game would be an ideal solution.

Ideation

We started off by thinking of as many game genres and topics that we could design and create a game from.

We then shuffled different genres and topics around until we all agreed on what we would take forward. This was a 2D side scroller game called Mission: Junk Buster.

My role in the project

I was responsible for

  • Looking into C# coding to figure out how to make the space junk move and rotate at different speeds
  • Creating the After Effects Video to demonstrate our project
  • Creating the game music using Garage Band
